2局上小熊靠著觸身球保送和內野安打攻佔一、二壘，2人出局的情況下小熊輪到投手Arrieta打擊，巨人以為能輕鬆化解危機，球數領先的Bumgarner大意失荊州，面對Arrieta投出偏高速球，Arrieta一棒拉出左外野全壘打牆，形成1發三分砲，2局結束小熊3：0領先。
賽前原先預期會是一場超級投手戰的比賽，在Arrieta轟出超驚奇三分砲後，為小熊隊注入了強心針。期望Bumgarner一夫當關的巨人則出現巨大危機，投完2局已經用了51球，被敲4支安打，另外挨了1發三分砲，狀況不如預期，巨人陷入苦戰。
